Hereditary: 2018 Review
Tiny Doll Houses and Horror Magic
Last May after throughly researching 'Hereditary' I decided to see this masterpiece in theaters. The surround sound and large screen does it for me every-time. A little backstory about this is it's directed by Ari Aster, stars: Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Gabriel Bryne and Milly Shapiro. They all get major brownie points. Because the recipe to cook this up was fantastic, it focused on the simple things in cinema. Like how Toni's character makes dollhouses. This movie is the master at building, it builds and takes you somewhere you didn't think you could go. Horror is fantasy after all.
A24 Distributed This Beast
Good horror movies have the ability to make something little in something huge. This movie's budget was $10 million and it grossed almost $80 million in the box office. One word: 'AMAZING!" John Carpenter did it with his cult classic 'Halloween' independent movie. Although Halloween 1978 worked on a much smaller scale $300,000 in the 70's, it turned it into $70 million profit. Yeah these horror movies if done right are financial beasts in the box office.
The House was a Character
Enough about the balance sheet lets talk about the house. Most of the film was shot in a woody, isolated location which made it creepy. The cinematography was a sight to be hold. After doing some digging I found out it was mostly filmed in Salt lake City Utah. Doing low budget films casting matters, but the location and house REALLY matter. Hereditary was filmed in a gorgeous cabin house in the woods. It added all the scream factor-- of course Toni did too. I saw this because I love her she's one of my favorite character actress's. Who knew she had scream queen in her?
21st Century Horror
This was my favorite horror movie of 2018 because it's magic (so far, we still have 'Halloween 2018'). Months later it's still in my head and such a trip. I don't do spoil alerts. But there is weird satanic family history nestled into it. Think 'Rosmary Baby' or maybe even 'The Shinning's plot and you get this modern day horror gem. Thank you to the cinema team for pumping this out.
