Ma: 2019 Review

Ma Movie and Blumhouse Productions

The movie Ma came out in May 2019 and I just had the pleasure of renting it on DVD recently. The reviews weren't stellar but I enjoyed relating to 'Ma's' character played by Octavia Spencer. The director is Tate Taylor who is known for 'The Help' and he's openly gay too. It got average reviews on Tomato and had a budget of: $5 million also grossed $60 million. That is Blumhouse Productions for you. They really know how to make a profit in horror movies. They're my hero's when it comes to producing movies. Thank you Jason Blumhouse again!

High School and its Drama

Spencer's acting is fun to watch and she's worked with Taylor before from 'The Help,' and they're friends and like doing projects together. She has a nice filmography and made this movie more watchable for sure. Without spoiling the plot Ma is a psychological thriller about hang ups, bullying and revenge. It takes place in Ohio which is Sue Ann's (lead characters) hometown. The high school kids she parties with call her: 'Ma.' She is an adult woman and likes to get teenagers drunk. Hey can we blame her having friends as an adult is hard.

This Movie is Some Fucked up Shit

Tate Taylor the director said: "I just want to make something fucked up" and Octavia wanted to be a not-type casted lead. And now you have an interesting plot with some great acting. Honestly, I thought it was going to be worse. I related to the high school bullshit of Sue Ann's character.  It definitely reminded me to not hold onto resentments. The movie made 2019 a little weirder and better after all these are strange, wonderful times. It is best served with a iced cold Pepsi.
