Mother! 2018: Review
Psychological Horror and Jennifer Lawrence
After watching 'Mother!' on Amazon Prime I'm feeling compelled to blog about it. When it came out in theaters last year there was a tiny desire to see it. Mostly because I'm big on Jennifer Lawrence. It's directed by Darren Aronofsky who's known for making disturbing films. Think movies like 'Black Swan' and 'Requiem for a Dream.' Yup he directed those flicks known for being off the wall kuku bears. The budget to make it was $30 million and it grossed $44 million. A $14 million profit isn't bad-- now you can take the kids to Disneyland.
Old Men Dating Young Women
Aronofsky also dated Lawrence while making 'Mother!' And he happens to be 21 years older than her. Coincidentally, Javier Bardem's character in the movie is 21 years older than her on screen lover, which is Jennifer. There's some rocking the cradle going on and off screen, such is life. And to be honest it grossed me out a lot. Maybe it's the point. The horrors of older men dating younger women scares me enough. But I guess it's a thing.
Summing up the Plot
Now I watched it and the weirdness from the movie is still haunting me. Not because I'm a mother but because they made it about a woman giving her heart-- literally through her chest, to a man twice her age. Not only did he rob of her youth but he impregnated and used her to help him sell books for his career as poet (Javier Bardem's character). Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris brought their star power as well. They wanted a chunk of the $14 million profit and they wanted to look at Jennifer Lawrence's face. She was by far my favorite part because she played a docile-doormat really well. Made me think of my mom. Hey that's not nice but maybe it's life. The movie touches on how life is surreal and disturbing in ways.
The Giant House and Production
If the strange plot doesn't do it for you or Lawrence's performance than maybe the house will entice you. The motion production of Mother! is none other than Aronofsky's: Protozoa Pictures in New York City. Apparently finding the perfect house was crucial to the movie. It was filmed in Montreal, Canada from the bottom up. That's right they built a house just for our viewing pleasure. The house was an unfinished piece of work like the movie. Haha! Minus a few hiccups it was entertaining and bat shit crazy. You can watch it for free on Amazon Prime, preferably with a cup of coffee. Your going to need a caffeine buzz for this one.
