Ratched: 2020 Review
One Flew Over the Ratched's Nest
Netflix recently came out with 'Ratched' on September 18, 2020. The show uses the cult classic 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 1962 novel as a frame of reference for the main character: Nurse Mildred Ratched. Mildred Ratched is played by Sarah Paulson-- love...love...love her. I love the people that put this together and the plot comes close to being 'really' interesting, although there were some holes in the storyline.
Cynthia Nixon plays Gwendolyn Briggs
I went into this show liking it better than I thought I would because of Cynthia Nixon. I don't want to spoil the show, but my least favorite part is giving a beautiful lesbian love story cancer (what a wet blanket). Not to say cancer doesn't exist. It does and it's sad, honestly go with a lesbian love story without cancer-- yeah!? You have Cynthia and Sarah two cream de-la crop people, capable of the most profound openly gay characters onscreen and you give her cancer. Haha! That my friends ruined the show for me, but I respect it for trying to be beautiful.
Season 2 is probably already filming
The production has set this up for Season 2 and it's not supposed to be a lesbian love story, which was my hook, but maybe it will be the queer show we're looking for. See I looked into Nurse Ratched and she's known for being a corrupt, bureaucratic nurse. By letting Gwen (Cynthia) go they line it up for another Season about a demented nurse, not a lesbian nurse. However, considering this takes place in the late 1940s/50s being gay in those times was illegal. This is why adding that to the storyline is not only real but relevant. I feel like they can keep it gay. Please watch this with some peach cobbler and iced tea.
